Kitasa Colbana, or Kit, is a half-human, half-aniera—that is, ancient amazon warrior. She has a magical sword that manifests in her hand when she calls it, and a few other special tricks. But she’s human enough to get hurt. Unfortunately, in a world filled vampires, were-creatures, and witches, she’s not human enough to count as human. As a half-breed, she’s one of them: the NH, the non-human, banished to the outskirts of society and at the mercy of a human military police force if she steps out of line.
She makes her living running her solo investigation business out of East Orlando, a town given over to the NH population, doing jobs for the local werewolves (very organized, very uptight), the local witches (often kind), but never, ever the werecats. Until today. Until Damon, a top-level werecat enforcer, shows up with stacks of money and a promise of more for her to locate the missing nephew of the pack’s Alpha. Kit doesn’t take the job for the money—well, not only for the money. She takes the job because a teenaged kid on the run is her weak spot. After all, she used to be one.
Kit is the perfect urban fantasy hero: nearly broken by her past, but holding it together today. Gentle to those weaker than her, stubborn with those stronger, and with more than a few strengths of her own. The only weakness of this self-published endeavor were the occasional flaws in grammar, which I easily overlooked as I flew through the pages in no more than two days of reading. (I’ve already finished the entire series and am impatiently waiting for the next installment.)
Adding a little spice to the mix is a powerful vampire obsessed with our hero, the werecat enforcer she must accept as her partner in the rundown, and a threat of death from the werecat Alpha should she fail. Fortunately, Kit rarely fails.
Despite the minor editing flaw, this book (and the series) is urban fantasy perfection. Buy it now.
