It is 2025, ten years after the apocalyptic event that left a large portion of the human population not so human any more. Shifters, witches, sidhe (faeries), even vampires have become prominent members of the population, transformed by the event known as Genesis. Normal humans still view these Gaeans with suspicion, and even among Gaeans there is a hierarchy.
Deirdre Tombs, a shifter who cannot shift, is at the very bottom of it. An Omega. For the ten years since Genesis, she’s lived in group homes for unwanted Gaean children, until she was kicked out the system and into public housing. She worked in repossession until she had a run-in with a man named Everton Stark, who plans to change the world.
After Genesis, an Alpha werewolf named Rylie Gresham became the de facto leader of all shifters, the largest population of Gaeans on Earth. Stark, another Gaean, hates everything Gresham stands for, and plans to take her down. Gresham asks Deirdre to infiltrate Stark’s organization because Deirdre, despite her Omega status—or perhaps because of it—is immune to an Alpha’s compulsion. Neither Stark, nor Gresham, can make her do anything she doesn’t want to do.
Deirdre agrees. The problem is, once inside Stark’s organization, she’s no longer sure where her loyalties lie any more. With the Alpha werewolf who left her in group homes her whole life, or with the Alpha who wants to change the system. Stark’s is a brutal world, but it’s a world Deirdre’s childhood prepared her for. Who will she choose?
This book does end on a hell of a cliff hanger. It’s clear that this story was meant to be a series when it was conceived, and this book can’t stand alone.
SM Reine has indie published many urban fantasy series, and all are fantastic. Some are truly outstanding. Omega is the first in a new series, and the first three books are available now. It’s likely you’ll be reading the next two in quick succession after you finish Omega. The book is just that good, and the cliff it ends on is steep.
