I have loved reading and writing as long as I can remember. Before I could read, I used to open large chapter books and scan my fingers across each line of text, imagining the story that lay before me. I grew up on fantasy and fiction, and fell in love with the The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede and the Redwall series by Brian Jacques.
As I grew older, I was introduced to the classics. Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Stranger by Albert Camus and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee shaped my idea of 'literature' and inspired me to continue writing. I also discovered Kurt Vonnegut, Chuck Palahniuk and Christopher Moore, and learned to appreciate a unique voice and a cutting sense of humor.
In non-fiction, I tend towards dark, depressing memoirs and psychological or scientific studies. I soaked up all of Jane Goodall’s books and my perception of the world was forever changed when I read A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah.
As I review books by debut authors, I will seek out stories that make me laugh, cringe and question my own perceptions. My goal is to learn, to be inspired and to discover new talent.
